Computers in the Workplace
Information Technology spans many sectors of expertise across multiple industries. Networking plays a crucial role in industries that require massive-scale communication, such as healthcare and education. Establishing the hardware, software, and framework for such companies requires knowledgeable IT teams. One such industry I have experience in is Amazon's delivery services. I never got to work with or see any IT technicians establish any network hardware or software. However, understanding more about the work and know-how that go into IT, I can see how much would be required to set up communications for drivers, warehouse workers, and dispatchers. For a delivery service to be successful, it would need servers set up at the warehouse to route connections from local computers and handheld devices used by both warehouse and delivery workers, as well as mapping applications to allow dispatchers to keep an eye on their drivers' whereabouts. The role of IT would need to configure these hardware and software setups in accordance with Amazon's guidelines, most likely using Amazon Web Services. A current trend among larger corporations is using software-as-a-service to easily configure applications for their companies at affordable price points. Now, with AI becoming the norm on the horizon, companies will be integrating this technology to handle smaller, more mundane workloads. In the case of Amazon delivery services, AI could be used to create routes for drivers based on their performance in specific sections of the cities they serve. This will not only automate route coordination but also improve performance based on statistical data.
